The SURGE Cosmological Argument

Five scientific evidences (SURGE) point to the definite beginning of the universe, requiring a transcendent cause.

The SURGE Cosmological Argument

Overview

Apologist Frank Turek presents five main lines of scientific evidence—denoted by the acronym SURGE—that point to the definite beginning of the space-time continuum. As astronomer Robert Jastrow concluded: 'Astronomers now find they have painted themselves into a corner because they have proven, by their own methods, that the world began abruptly in an act of creation... supernatural forces at work is now, I think, a scientifically proven fact.' Since nature itself was created at the Big Bang, the cause must be supernatural—spaceless, timeless, immaterial, powerful, intelligent, and personal.

Key Points

S - Second Law of Thermodynamics: Universe is running down (entropy increasing)

U - Universe is Expanding: Galaxies moving apart, traced back to single origin

R - Radiation Afterglow: Cosmic Microwave Background discovered by Penzias & Wilson (Nobel Prize)

G - Great Galaxy Seeds: Temperature variations in CMB that became galaxies (Smoot, Nobel Prize)

E - Einstein's General Relativity: Predicts space, time, and matter had a beginning

Cause must be: spaceless, timeless, immaterial, powerful, intelligent, personal
